For example, xiaomi's internet of things/connected devices kit was launched earlier this year, and for 200 rmb, starts enabling some interesting "if this then that" scenarios. For example: if I open my window, please turn off all my air purifiers in my home. Or, if the infrared sensor detects motion, please turn on the usb-port of my intelligent socket, which has a small usb-powered LED lamp on it, sitting in my bathroom. Yes, I did just create the internet-of-things version of a nightlight. It also has a setting to auto power-off after 2 mins of inactivity.
but yay. that should be interesting when it comes out! I'm thinking it might not take that long. My xiaomi friend told me to be on the lookout for something in Q4, and I'm pretty sure it wasn't the xiaomi 4c that I just bought -- which, by the way, is a fantastic android device for $200 USD. (qualcomm 808 processor + 2gb ram + 16gb memory -- basically the specs are similar to the newly released nexus 5x, although the camera leaves much to be desired)
it has some really nice customizations for the local Chinese market.
For example: 2-factor authentication via cellphone text is extremely prevalent here -- it's used for everything from activating accounts to authorizing payments. So, in short, your cellphone # is your lifeline. But MIUI (xiaomi os) will automatically scan your text messages, and when it sees that there's a text message containing a 2-factor code, it surfaces a notification with a "copy" button, which enables you to immediately copy that code and paste it into the app that is waiting for it. Saves a bit of energy and brainpower. Small innovation, huge benefit for the userbase.
